Letter and power of attorney, 1779-1798.

Letter dated 1779 from Robert Paine to John Cushing summoning him to court. Printed form dated 1798 seems to assign to Ebenezer Niles of Boston power of attorney, signed by Gad Kelley for himself and on behalf of his business partner Waters Clark, with Robert Paine as witness.

Robert Treat Paine (March 11, 1731 – May 11, 1814) was an American lawyer, politician, and Founding Father of the United States who signed the Continental Association and the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts. He served as the state's first attorney general, and served as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court. Paine was also a founding member of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and had always opposed slavery. ...

John Cushing (1741-1812) was born in Boxford, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1761, and received an M.A. in 1765. In 1775 Cushing was Captain of a company of Boxford minutemen. He participated in the battle for Hog and Noddles Islands, and served in the Rhode Island campaign of 1778. He was sent by Boxford to the House of Representatives in 1779 and served on the committee to auction off Tory estates.
